Have you still got it? One of my MTMs did exactly that one day and it
was just a dirty socket.

Sounds like a crappy battery. I changed one a few days ago. It had been
in there since 1985 and was literally about to burst! If you own a volt
meter, check the battery if it's a new one. Expect +3,65 or very close
to it. If it drops below 3 you're sure in for the trouble you mention.
