We've been running a mixture of real SDS8 and triggered samples (all from SDS9 pads) at live shows reliably for a couple of years now. SDS8 always supplies the kick, sounds awesome through a big PA. The "sample" pads are triggering samples in Reason via an old Roland Octopad - it has trigger inputs on the back that are MIDI assignable. We usually hang the Octopad off one of the tom stands and that is used for triggering additional samples. Interface is an M-Audio Firewire 410. The beauty of Reason is that the samples load with the song, ie no changing note numbers for songs. This rig can be seen in some of the photos here: http://www.tycho.com.au/photos/20090331-the-human-league/
