You ∗do∗ get them like that. The two positive terminals are just
spot-welded onto the end of one cell, so they're connected together.
You'll probably find that only one pad on the board has anything
connected to it.

Incidentally it's worth noting that my SDS-7 had a lithium, not NiCd
battery in it. Check to make sure there's no charging circuit. If it's
one of those blue oval Varta 3-legged batteries with three or four
flattish cells, it's NiCd.
