I did this with a few of my pads too. It is not bad to spray a plastic primer first and to polish the paint one week later.
But I made also a few bad experiences: I used spray paint for cars and the look is ok. But if you get rubber in contact with the paint for some time, like the pad packed together in a case with cables or other pads surfaces, the softeners of the rubber play aggressive and destroy the paint.
An alternative is foiling the pad like they do with cars too. The foil is ultra high gloss and very resistive to scratches or bumps.

I've finally decided to paint my shells from my SDS-1000.I have 7 toms and a bass.I've disassembled the pads and plan to give them a light rub with fine steel wool.I'm going to mask the edge that goes into the pad and the logos.I haven't decided on a color yet....but the black has got to go.
I'll take pix as I go and post them up.Any advice would be appreciated.Stay tuned!!!
