Subject: Moderator news: live chat with yahoo personnel? too good to be true?
From: jesper <jesper@...>
Date: 2008-07-22
Hi list,
as moderator of an active list I was invited to chat online with the
yahoogroups staff. Keep your fingers crossed, I hope to sort out the
annoying business of the missing group owner.
If this works out I can get to pre-approve all new posts and we won't
have the problems with spam any longer.
Also, I kicked out all with "bounce" pre-dating 2007. This will result
in a drop in member figures but it's just to make things smoother. If
you suddenly cannot post it might be a glitsch in the system and you'll
need to re-join.
OK, even when talking to a real person at the yahoo end there is no
solution. What a bunch of clowns. If you're interested in what I said
and the stupid answers, you'll find them below. I at least did my best...

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with Aimee
Aimee: Welcome to our Yahoo! Groups live chat service. I'm glad you've
joined us.
Aimee: We are sorry for the delay. We sincerely appreciate you staying
and we're glad to be of service. How can I help you today?
Aimee: We have not heard from you. Do you wish to continue the chat?
jesper: Hi, I'm the moderator of Simmons_drums and we have no owner.
Aimee: I understand that you have inquiries regarding claiming the
ownership of the group.
Aimee: Is that right?
jesper: Yes, Scott, the original group owner, is lost and noone has
heard from him. This makes us an easy target for spammers since I cannot
check new members postings.
Aimee: Thank you for the information.
Aimee: May I have the name of the Yahoo! groups account you are having
issues with?
jesper: Do you mean the address, or the full name?
jesper: Or the owner?
Aimee: No, just the name of the group.
jesper: Simmons_Drums
Aimee: Thank you.
Aimee: And the Yahoo! ID associated with it is?
jesper: simplyanalogue
Aimee: Thank you.
Aimee: I apologize for any inconveniences this has caused you.
Aimee: Have you tried contacting the owner?
jesper: if you mean _me_ - the owner is scott_casiotone
jesper: Yes, I've mailed Scott, googled the net for him and asked the
list for off-list contacts without results.
Aimee: Thank you for the information.
Aimee: However, we cannot assign a new owner for the group.
jesper: May I ask why?
Aimee: We are not allowed to do that in our end, Jesper.
jesper: So there is no solution to our problem? Scott might be dead for
all I know.
Aimee: Regarding this issue of changing group owner, we highly recommend
that you create a new group and invite the same members.
Aimee: With regard to the spam issues, you can always report it to our
Abuse Team.
jesper: I've thought about that, but that would mean loosing the entire
message archive and other old resources.
jesper: I kick out spammers on a weekly basis, it's no huge problem. Not
yet...
Aimee: I apologize for the inconveniences this has caused you.
jesper: I know the members can appoint new moderators, I thought you
ought to come up with a similar solution to this problem.
Aimee: No, the owners of the group has the sole privilege to appoint
group owners/moderators.
jesper: I know - I just think it's strange that a functional group
without an active owner needs to suffer by not having the possibility of
scanning new members etc.
Aimee: I apologize but the group owner has failed to give you that
privilege.
jesper: I bet a lot of questions to you concerns this problem. There
ought to be a better solution than just creating a new groups...
Aimee: I sincerely apologize for this issue.
Aimee: Rest assured that we are doing our best to serve you better.
jesper: But OK... pass the request on and I'll sign off now. A bit
disappointed I must say...
Aimee: I will take note of that.
Aimee: Would that be all?
jesper: That'd be all.
Aimee: Thank you for using Yahoo! Groups. If you have any other
questions, please feel free to come back and chat with us at any time.
Aimee: I would appreciate if you could take a moment to share your
experience with us by completing our survey, just click on "Close."
