I agree,
for me the SDSIII isn't "really" a Simmons ...
but it had been the base !
it's a pure analog synth more than a drum synth...
So yes it's difficult to compare SDSV & III as the use will be
necessary different !
But what devastating balls in it !!!
I compare often the SDSIII to an ARP synth, because of the look ,
the sound, & also because Dave was repairing ARPs when he made the
SDSIII ...
so I presume the inspiration & influence was strong...
I should check that !
I personnaly discovered the SDSIII & SDSIV very late... about 3 years
ago I guess, I didn't even suspected that it existed before ,
while in the same time I've been looking for Simmons for ten years
so I think that there was not many people who knew it existed.
& about the 808 or 909 (& we could had the Fairlight Page R, or even
the MPC AKAI)...
a friend of mine who had his glory hours using all this stuff,
did insist a lot about the sequencer being very important to the
global sound of these units .
it makes them sound in a way that you lose even if using the same unit
trigged by another sequencer...
