Hi!
I used to own one and to be honest it was the worst Simmons unit I've ever
owned. But yes, I _think_ it uses a battery for backup so start there. A
general overhaul of contacts seems like a good idea. If you can't get it
working they're seldom too expensive on Ebay though this may be a poor
consolation considering that many people have prejudices towards sending to
eastern Europe...
