Please excuse me if I'm explaining stuff you already know, or
misreading anything.
Anyway, it looks from what you've written that you've got some
confusion between MIDI and audio. MIDI is not sound, it's just a
control language - what the MTM sends to the Akai over MIDI is a
string of numbers that says "can you please play the sound you have
stored at xyz123 now". It's the Akai that makes the sound in this case.
(Course, the SDS makes sound too but that's not MIDI so I left it out)

You won't need to deal with the MIDI ports of the Midiverb or the SPM
unless you are going to be -controlling- them over MIDI, ie from a
computer or a hardware sequencer. And hooking up the MIDI out of the
Akai to the MIDI in of the SPM won't get any Akai -sound- into the mixer.
Can you tell us what you want to do with this setup? Is it purely for
live work, jamming etc? Do you want to record? Do you want to use
this with a MIDI sequencer?
Maybe I'm getting this all wrong, and you know exactly what you're
doing, but it's not clear from what you've written.
I'll add some more comments below.

So far so good. You hit a pad, the MTM sends a MIDI "note on" signal
to the Akai, the Akai plays whatever sample is set up for that note.
The trigger out makes the SDS go boom at the same time. If that's
what you want.
You'll need to set up the note assignments and MIDI channels for the
MTM and the Akai so they're the same.

Ok.

This isn't necessary/won't work. What you want is
5. Hook main audio out of S900 to (something)

Nah. Then -all- your Simmons drums will have the exact same effect/s
on them. This is OK sorta, but it's much more fun if you can apply a
little or a lot or none to each drum.
That's what the "Aux" or "Send" or "FX" knobs on the SPM are for. And
the plugs so labelled on the back.
ie.
instrument effects unit
| in out
| ^ |
v | v
========================================
in send return
| ^ |
v | v
(Aux)---->-----' (fx)--------,
| |
v v
(Vol)--------------------------(master)->main out
=========================================
everything between === is inside the mixer
(this)(is)(a)(knob)
Mkay?
This is tricky to set up when you're working with two small mixers. I
know, I've done it a lot. It is a lot easier when you've got one
bigger mixer that has enough ins for all your instruments and has
enough "Aux" outs for your FX rack. I traded two of my small ones on
a bigger one for this reason.
What I'd suggest is
6. Main audio outs of SPM to two channels on Peavey.
6a. Aux outs of SPM to two channels on Peavey.
> 7. Hook MIDI output of SPM8:2 to MIDI input of Alesis Midiverb
Skip that. Try:
7a. hook Aux outs of SPM to two available channels on the Peavey
7b. hook stereo aux out of Peavey to ins on Midiverb
> 8. hook left and right outputs of Alesis Midiverb to 2 available

Yeah, if there are two left! Then you can EQ the effects. Otherwise
go to the stereo Aux return.
If you go the way you've written keep the knobs down on the 'verbs
channels on the Peavey. Unless you like feedback :-)

No reason/won't do anything.

Dunno about that. If that even works, you'll change both MTM and SDS
setups every time, and you might want to change them seperately.

Nope. MIDI's not audio. You need to connect the audio out of the
Akai to an audio in on a mixer.
Hope that clears things up a little.
I don't know the Midiverb very well. Can it do two separate effects
on the left and right inputs, or is it just stereo? If it can do two
separate ones, I can suggest another setup. With more bad ASCII art :)
Have you got manuals for everything? If not, it's probably a good
idea to grab them off the net. Try here for the Simmons stuff, and
Google for the rest.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
