I use a cheap wall wart that has switchable voltage. I run my two SDS-1s on
the same wall wart with a splitter cable between. So, no it's nothing
critical. Don't go up to 9 volts though 'cause you might fry something...

On semi-digital equipment going lower might prove interesting though with
loss in sound quality which sometimes is very interesting... A friend did a
track with a TB-303 where he slowly sucked the power out of it - interesting
results!
