Those small geared motors are often AC syncronous.
You could try a "poor man's frequency converter" which basically allows a
positive halfwave to go through, then waits, then lets a negative through,
waits, positive, etc.. But usually they do not speed control without a
frequency converter which is rather pricey even used.
