I've only become obsessed with the CS-80 for the past several months...since I don't have $20k to throw down on one, what is the next best option? I've seen a lot of people talk about the CS-60 as the next best thing, but what about the CS-70m? Or is there another Yamaha CS model out there that I am missing?

The closest thing is imo the CS70m. You lose the velocity sensitivity and some other features, but in all it's a great synth with the same VCO, VCF etc as the CS-80 + you get the 2 vco/voice, which you don't get with the 60 or 50. I have the 60,70 and 80, so I know what I'm talking about :) Check out these excellent demos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfg8VHR08lU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcNp_-Rdkdg&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fne0oIEv-WI&feature=channel Fredrik Segerfalk www.analogsweden.com Jo Jo Hillingsworth wrote:

You might want to give the GX-1 a try :-). Seriously, I think a CS60 comes closest to the 80 in terms of performance, and even a CS50 can do a lot of the tricks -- if not the best, alas -- of the 80. If you´re only after the sound, these smaller model will do. A CS70M has about as much in common with a CS80 as, say, a Polymoog with a Memorymoog. My vote for a CS-80 substitute goes to two CS-50s. You can play them together in unison with different settings and get *a lot* of the CS-80 sound. Yes the CS-70M does have the dual channel structure, and more sophisticated LFOs, but where I think it falls down is in the filtering. The CS-70M only provides a single (multi-mode) filter per channel voice, whereas the CS-50, CS-60 and CS-80 all share that resonant high pass into low pass structure which I think is responsible for *a lot* of the polyphonic CS sound.

and, as implied, a polymoog can get pretty close SONICALLY(obviously not performance-wise). --- On Mon, 3/30/09, Richard Atkinson <rga24@...> wrote:

Oh, I have, but I wasn´t impressed. It is nice in its own right -- like a Polymoog certainly is -- but it has nothing that would make me want to own one. If you buy it as a CS80 replacement, you will be disappointed. How can you play two CS-50's in unison--do they both need the Kenton midi mod? On 31/03/2009, at 1:14 AM, Richard Atkinson wrote: > My vote for a CS-80 substitute goes to two CS-50s.
