Help put together CS-80 discography!

Help put together CS-80 discography!

2004-11-17 by David Rogoff

Hi all.

Well, as much as I love talking CS-80 tech, I'd like to know about
music made with them. So, I'd like input on a CS-80 (and relatives)
discography. I'll start with a few obvious ones. Everyone add a few,
and I'll put them in a table on the Database page.

CS-80 U.K. U.K. Eddie Jobson 1978
CS-80 Green Album Zinc Eddie Jobson 1983
CS-80 A Jethro Tull Eddie Jobson 1980
CS-80 Azure d'Or Renaissance John Tout 1979
CS-80 Patrick Moraz Patrick Moraz Patrick Moraz 1978

others I'm not sure of details: Kate Bush, J. Geils Band, Toto,
Vangelis - can some one fill in?

Anyone still touring/recording with one?

Let the list begin!

David

Vangelis' introductory CS-80 album is 'Spirals'. Just about every
release from then until and including the OST to 1492 has lots of CS-80.

The Jon and Vangelis stuff is also full of it. Oddly enough I was
listening to "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" earlier today when David's
message came through.

Here's a few I can think of off the top of my head:

Vangelis- Soil Festivities (my fave Vangelis CS80 stuff) some of it is
very open -just CS alone

Wings-Londontown (don't forget"With a Little Luck")

Steve Harley- Hobo with a Grin(out of print) -I have the album-some
really great fat CS-80 parts-maybe I'll transfer it someday

David Sancious- Just As I thought- I heard there was CS-80 on this-
can't tell for sure from listening- although some of best synth stuff
I've heard. I'll post an MP3

Duncan Mackay- I've only heard of this album not heard it (does that
make sense?)

I'll think of more!

Re: [yamahacs80] Help put together CS-80 discography!

2004-11-18 by Wavecomputer360

Hi folks,

Pete Forrest´s revised edition of his A-Z of analogue synthesisers gives a
lot of info as to who used a CS80 where. Apart from that, here´s what I´ve
gathered:

basically all Vangelis stuff from "Beaubourg" until "1492"is choc full of
CS-80 (his "Blade Runner" bootleg album probably being the best of the
bunch). Amazing timbral scope, too. From extremely massive to very sweet and
almost "kitschy". Just for the record, Vangelis owned (or still owns) nine
CS-80s.

Kate Bush used one extensively on "The Dreaming", and so did Suzanne Ciani
on "Seventh Wave" (or was it "Velocity of Love"?). One of Vangelis´ machines
(borrowed from him).

Joel Fajerman used one on "Les Aventures des plantes" (issued in Argentina,
I think, as "Las aventuras de las plantas").

All albums by Passport and Snowball where Kristian Schultze played keyboards
(from about 1978 onwards). Schultze used to be an avid CS-80 user (two
machines) and sold them both a while ago. I think he even used it on some
Cusco albums (the other project he was involved in, just like playing
keyboards on the early anime TV series "Captain Future").

Klaus Schulze also loved his CS-80. His album "Dune" is almost entirely
CS-80. On some other albums from the early 1980s, the CS is also featured
strongly.

Peter Gabriel used one on his 1986 album "So" ("Don´t give up", a duet
with -- surprise, surprise -- Kate Bush).

The first album by Nina Hagen where Reinhold Heil played keyboards. Now, a
punk band with a CS-80.. this is really bourgeois.

ABBA, of course. I´m quite sure they not only used the GX-1 but also the
CS-80 (on "The Album", for instance. "Eagle" would be a prime example).

Tomita used the CS-80 a good deal on "The Ravel Album", "Dawn Chorus" and
"Grand Canyon".

Tim Blake had a CS-80 when he recorded "New Jerusalem", and his sideman
Jean-Philippe Rykiel also had one.

Angelo Branduardi used at least two, if not three CS-80s (a friend of mine
bought one off his keyboard player, and this keyboard player had two CS-80s
at his farmhouse).

Jean-Michel Jarre used a CS-60 on earlier albums (like "Equinoxe" and
"Concerts in China") and obtained a CS-80 for the recording of "Oxygene
7-13" in 1997 which also showed up in all promo material (like the MTV
interview at his studio).

I´m quite sure that Frank Duval also had one ("Give me your love" sounds
like there´s a lot of CS-80 used).

Gerd Führs (of Schicke, Führs, Fröhling) was a session player in Hamburg
during the 80s and was one of the few CS-80 specialists at Yamaha Germany
until he died in a car crash in 1993.

Don Slepian used one on "Sonic Perfuma".

Rolf Trostel had a CS-80 for years and used it for some (yet unreleased)
concerts, but the instrument ended up in an upright position behind his
living room door, serving as a nice shelf for a bunch of cacti.

Tim Cross played CS-80 on mike Oldfield´s "QE2" album, and I´m quite sure
mike also had a CS-80 of his own. pete lemer played a CS80 during the
Oldfield concert live at knebworth in 1982.

Frank Zappa also used a CS-80 (but i don´t know on which albums).

Joerg Strawe recorded his album "Jewels" back in 1993 and used the CS-80 a
great deal (musically, the album isn´t really worth listening IMO, but here
you go...).

John Kerr recorded all his early albums between 1983 and 1988 on just a
CS-50 (does that count?) and a Roland VP-330.

As for still touring / recording with one:

The humble author of these lines is currently finishing recordings for an
album that is about 75% CS-80 (the rest being shared between Rhodes 73 Mk. 1
piano, Mini Moog, Roland VP-330 and some other stuff).

How about compiling some CS-80 recordings of all list members?

Regards,

Stephen.

Hi Steven,

Great post, very interesting...

Part of your post got me thinking, (JMJ, Cs80 Mtv footage) id really like to aquire some video footage of Vangelis, in the studio with his Cs80 and other instruments.
That would make such interesting viewing for me, i admire Vangelis hugely, his musical vision is still very inspiring...

A guy in Ireland i spoke to about a year ago told me that he had such a tape, of Vangelis footage.

I know there are some small Mpegs on the net showing clips of such footage.

Can anyone help me out with this, i would be happy to pay.
Any type of media, Mpeg, Video, DVD etc..etc..
I would also be interested in any JMJ studio footage, or come to think of it any type of studio footage...

Cheers,
Rob.

GX-1 vs. CS-80 basic sounds

2004-11-18 by dscr22

So how much overlap in the capability to generate basic
sounds is there between the GX-1 and CS-80? Not counting
any obviously lacking features they didn't port from former
to latter.

I haven't been able to get those Village Ghettoland strings
programmed yet. The string presets and global controls sure
don't get you there. I would assume the CS-80 should be able
to do that sound spot on - any advice?

Disclaimer: I know it's considered lame to ask how to program X
patch on Y pop hit.

Perhaps it'd be useful to have a section of templates people could
post of some cool sounds, in addition to posting sound samples?
Given the limited memory storage, imprecision in replicating
slider settings, and presence of the global controls, it's not
like anybody's CS-80 is going to turn into a preset machine.

Hi Rob,

as far as I know there´s just this one videoclip available that shows
Vangelis in his studio, playing "The Dragon" (loads of other stuff
visible... ARP Pro Soloist, Roland System 100, ARP Sequencer etc.). The MTV
interview featuring Jarre was shot somewhere in an apartment where all his
goodies are on display but apparently not patched up or plugged in (Moog 55
without patchcords, ARP 2500 with sequencer running, VCS-3 tucked away in a
corner, ARP 2600 with no audio connections on top of an RMI Harmonic, and
CS-80 with some Roland DJ-70 on top). Not very informative, mainly thanks to
an awful girlie doing the interview (puke!).

As for Vangelis vieo stuff Dennis Lodewijks in The Netherlands seems to be
*the* source for this kind of stuff. He runs the Elsewhere website, I think
(googling should deliver some results). He sure can help.

I forgot to include SAGA in my list ("World´s Apart").

Best,

Stephen.

I was at the Jethro Tull "A" Concert in Los Angeles 1980- watching
Eddie Jobson (who I recently met at a special screening of BIG BROTHER)
inspired me to buy my own CS60- no way did I have the $ to buy a
CS80...
Also I think Paul McCartney had one and used it on the Wings over
America tour- can anyone confirm this?

You bet (recording that is, not touring).

Sophie B. Hawkins - "Wilderness" (2004, Trumpet
Swan/Lightyear). Track 13, "Soul Lover (Infinite Space
mix)" has some CS80 filter sweeps.

... and thanks go to Marhall (on this list) for being
kind enough to part with his CS80 :-)

Yeah, I do miss it sometimes, until I think about trying to tune it. Not to mention all those posts about replacing chips and keeping CS-50's and -60's around for spare parts. I am glad it is in a place where it can be really taken care of....you practically need to be an EE to keep it going!

Add to discography:
Steve Winwood is reputed to have played one.
I'd think Arc of A Diver.

I do have to admit, I hate tuning it. Fortunately it's
pretty stable. I did it a few times when I first got
it, to get it right. And now it's in pretty good
shape, though it could use a little tweak every now
and then. You know, if there were simply a visual
indication as to which voice is sounding, tuning
wouldn't be too difficult at all.

I believe Crow (and someone else here) implemented an LED system to help identify which card was sounding.....the one and only time I tuned the CS-80 it took me almost 3 1/2 hours, and one of the problems was making sure I was tuning the right card!

I can also suggest

Brian Eno : Before and after science ( on "Julie with..." and "By
this river")

Cluster, Brian Eno : Cluster & Eno ( CS-80 is perhaps the only synth
played and you can bet you can recognize it...listen to "Shone Hande"
and "Die Bunge" among all )

BTW : as a Vangelisian I can suggest the album where to listen to CS-
80 best :

Spiral 1977
Opera Sauvage 1979
Beaubourg 1978
China 1979

with Irene Papas : Odes 1979
with Jon Anderson : Short Stories 1979-80

Well...there are also many non-V records where the man played the cs-
80...you can hear it also on two discomusic tracks that the man
published under a nickname ; consider also some more obscure artists
which benefied of the V's cs sound : Krisma ("Chinese
Restaurant") ,Peter Marsh (..a couple of songs), Suzanne Ciani
("Velocity of Love" ,on the track "History of my heart") Neuronium
("In London" which in fact comes from a Spanish TV show made in 1981).
Some more will come to my mind next time...!

I forgot to say....Re: Help put together CS-80 discography!

2004-12-16 by maxferfranc

Why these V albums and not the following ones?
Even if I am a fan of all V music I suggest those albums because the
cs-80 sound is much cleaner than on the next records : sometimes V
uses a Masterroom sprin reverb and a tape delay in a subtle
way ,while in the albums starting from "see you later" the sound
comes loaded of digital reverberation (courtesy of L 224): moreover V
plays more cs on these albums than on the following ( from SYL to
Rhapsodies the strings will come only from VP330 !!!)

RE: [yamahacs80] I forgot to say....Re: Help put together CS-80 discography!

I'm a big fan of almost everything Vangelis has recorded, but the
Antarctica soundtrack is among his best ("tied" with Blade Runner, IMO).
I've never seen the movie, but the soundtrack definitely inspires
visions of a cold, icy and desolate land. It certainly sounds chock
full of CS-80, though it's much more dense than some of the earlier
recordings with many layers of synths going on.

Yes , the movie is great although you must face an annoying voiceover who would better have been cut off the actual dvd release: the movie talks about the true story of a number of sledge huskies left in the south pole by a team of Japanese scientists  ,and their struggle for life : in the movie version there's some more cs-80 music, not the blasting brasses only, you can hear it with tones made through the ringmodulator and ribbon combined action ,to make some "coooold" noises...by the way Anarctica is also the first V score featuring a DX7 too (over a earlier GS-1!) ,and I assure you there's less cs-80 than on the 77-80 records !! Another curiosity : in the movie score you can find the track that Ridley Scott used in 1992 for the unicorn sequence in Blade Runner DC : it actually comes from Antarctica!!!
