Darren,

Turn the metronome on if you don't have a drum track already in place. Set count-in to either one bar (4 beats) or two bars (eight). Begin playing after the count-in.

Or, assuming you have software 2.0, you could scroll past he two bar choice and set it to "first note record" - a single note icon indicates that option. The recording will begin when you hit the first note.

Play freely until the end of the eighth measure. No need to stop the sequencer exactly at 8.4. If you have the pattern length set to eight bars just be sure to stop playing before bar one begins again. Then hit stop(twice). Listen to it. If it isn't tight enough re-do it or try quantizing it a bit 10-50%. If you leave swing set to the default 50% it won't add any (swing, that is). And, if you try the quantize be sure to set it a note value that makes sense for the riff you have laid down. 16th note quantize at about 20% might tweak things just enough for your bass-line to sound "on" but natural. You will use quantize quite a bit before knowing exactly what you want to get out of it.

Also, of course, you could grid sequence or step sequence.

Loads of trial and error in this area will probably be required but you will be amazed at what you can pull off. If you are a musician of some sort already then it will just be a matter of learning how to use the machine.

Hope some of this helps.

Scott
