Ok. Multitimberality really means the instuments can play that many
simultaneous patches at the same time. Most synths are 16 voice multitimbral
because midi only lets you transmit distinct information for 16 midi channels.
Some equipment like the Yamaha A5000 has multiple midi in's for 32 patches at a
time, or the XL-7 which has 32 tracks internally but can only recieve 16
channels from another device. If your computer only has one midi cable sticking
out (Via gameport midi adapter) you will only get 16 distinct tracks of
sequencing, which could play 16 different sounds at a time on the virus KC, or
16 channels on the Orbit, or 8 on the virus and 8 on the orbit etc. If I were
you I would still get the XL7 instead since it can sequence 16 tracks for itself
and 16 tracks for the Virus at the same time.
If you get what you are suggesting (And it would kick ass) you will need the
following setup
Either:
Computer->GamePort Cable->virus KC->Orbit 3->computer
OR
Computer -->Midiman USB 2x2 midi port---->Virus XC->2x2
L---->Orbit 3 ->2x2
So when cubase vst says it will do 64 channels of audio it means it can do 4
ports of up to 16 midi channels, or say your drum channels play on the same
midi channel (Midi Channel 10 is usually assigned to drums, each note plays a
different sound and gets it's own track) and uses 5 tracks would = 20 tracks
playing on 16 channels. Double this if you have a midiman usb midi port for two
midi outs. If you had this you would have 32 total midi channels and
potentially multiple tracks playing on the same midi channel for a total of up
to 64 channels in Cubase. It's very doubtfull you will ever hit this number
though and if you did you can use midi program changes to switch out sounds on a
midi channel.
