Off the bat, I have to say that I WAS fairly impressed by the sound set that came with my XL7, but I would not classify it as being warm...in my opinion it just barely makes 'room temperature'. That's not necessarily bad, it's good to have a diverse artinerary of instruments to work with, warm and cold alike. I don't care to much for Roland or Yamaha's Analog modeling synths, they are quite digital still...but as for Clavia...man, you are so wrong about Clavia. I own a Nord Modular, which is by far there best synth yet, and it can be anything really, warm cold, ripping hot...between the modular and the 3 Leads, the clavia synths are the closest I have heard to being analog, while remaining in the digital realm 100% (the Access Virus pulls a very close second as well). Beyond the Modular, I have a few analog synths as well, an Oberheim Matrix 6r, a Korg EX8000, and a Vermona DRM1 MKII....there warmth is phenomanal to say the least...BUT there are sounds that I can make on my (ex)Korg Prophecy, and my K2500 and Nor modular, that could never be produced via a true analog based synth (with the exception of the ANdromeda perhaps). SO, there is a great deal of good to be said for digital AND analog alike. One of the best ways to get more warmth out of 'colder' sounding gear, is to run it through analog fx...it cuts down those frigid edges and corners. Something like a true Spring reverb or delay, Lexicon's are very very nice fx...another good way is to run the synth through a tube based amp or processor, like an old guitar amp, and then mic it. It has incredibly nice results. Beyond effects, your only other choice is to program as much warmth into as you can, like mildly modulating the pitch's of seperate layers at different slow rates with random lfo's...it gives a much nicer pulsing softer feel. I think the coldest edge of the xx7's are there resonance in the filters...it's quite horrible in my opinion, I'm not just knocking the command stations, resonant filters are usuaully the downfall of any digital synth, few can come close to a warmth with them, and none I've heard are perfect.
