I assmue you are using an XL-7, and not some P2K critter. I have to say that my XL-7 seems to do this without much problem. The only way this can get to be confusing is that some presets use more than one instrument (sample playback voice) in the patch, and there are cases in the XL presets where moving the filter control knobs won't produce much of an audible result. Could this possibly be the case? Just guessing at the moment, as the filter controls for my XL do it in real time. Tell us a bit more about if you are using a factory patch, and if so which one when you get this problem.
