However, if the administrator disallows attachments, then HTML messages 
will not be even recieved by the group at all. ( I think).

It's on you to do that, not us.  Go to: 

http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups 

Then click on XL-7 as the group you want.  From there, you'll see a link 
on the far right side of the screen that says: 

"Edit My Membership" 

Click on that, scroll down a bit and select: 

Message Format - Do Not Convert To HTML. 

Save your changes. 

Done.
