Also, what OS do you have? If not 2.0, try upgrading the OS.
In case those don't clear up the problem, let me clarify my previous
steps:
(1a) When you experience this kind of lock up, can you tell which
preset(s) are in use at that moment?
(1b) If you know which presets are in use when the problem occurs,
look to see if they are from ROM [eg, P/123] or User RAM [User].
(2) [If they are from User RAM, go to Step 3. If not, you could try
testing the ROMS via diagnostics mode, but that seems like a long
shot since you are able to use the ROMS.]
(3) Select one of the User Presets and check presets:
(3a) Press Edit Preset.
(3b) Scroll through the Preset parameters and look for question marks
(??? or ????) in the display, such as the following:
--------------------------
LINK 1 PRESET ???
off
--------------------------
--------------------------
ARPEGGIATOR ????
Pattern 02^0 (not instld)
--------------------------
[Make sure to check the Pattern page in the ARPEGGIATOR menu]
--------------------------
AUDITIION RIFF ????
Plays:(not installed)
--------------------------
(4) If you have parameters with question marks, change them to valid
settings (no question marks).
Again, this may not be your problem; I suggest it because I have had
those symptoms with this problem.
Hope this clarifies my previous post.

PS: I doubt the problem is due to a bad ROM, but it couldn't hurt to
do some diagnostics:
(1) Hold both cursor buttons down and power up the E-Mu to enter
diagnostics mode.
DO >>**NOT**<< INITIALIZE DATA UNLESS YOU WANT TO WIPE OUT ALL USER
DATA (including all patterns and all user presets).
I can't emphasize this enough:
If you initialize data in Diagnostics mode, YOU WILL LOOSE USER
PRESETS AND USER SEQUENCES (PATTERNS AND SONGS).
(If you only want to wipe out all User Presets, there is a
diagnostics option for that.)
(2) Run RAM Test, Sound Rom Test for each slot in which you have a
ROM, and Sound Data CRC Test. (The RAM and Rom tests should pass; the
CRC test should give to a number. You don't want to see the
word "bad" as in "bad CRC" or something like that.)
(3) When done, select Reboot option.
Again, the problem doesn't sound like a bad ROM, but it couldn't hurt
to check.
