Re: XL-7 synched to computer ( Sonar <==>E-Mu sync )

I agree. Use e-loader to do this!!! No need to mess with syncing the
two for this task. With e-loader, you can select several sequences
at once to download. You can choose to save them in your Sonar
directory instead of the default e-loader directory.

HOWEVER:

If you want to sync the two for another reason, you can do that
later--after you use eloader to get the drum patterns into Sonar.
You will have to set one up as master and the other as slave.

In the E-Mu (OS2.0) the MIDI menu system has three important clock
menus: (1) BASE TEMPO, (2) TRANSMIT MIDI CLOCK, and (3) EXTERNAL
SONG START/STOP (among other important midi options).

If you want to sync the E-Mu to Sonar just as a sound module:
Set BASE TEMPO to 0 (0=external clock)
Set TRANSMIT MIDI CLOCK to off
Set EXTERNAL SONG START/STOP to ignored.

If you want to sync the E-Mu to Sonar and have the E-Mu sequencer
play along with Sonar:
Set BASE TEMPO to 0 (0=external clock)
Set TRANSMIT MIDI CLOCK to off
Set EXTERNAL SONG START/STOP to accepted.

For both of these make sure Sonar is sending midi clock. I am not
sure if Sonar 4 is the same as Sonar 3, but in case it is here's the
Sonar setup:

Select Options | Project | Clock tab
Select Source = internal
Select Options | Project | Sync tab
Select Transmit Midi Start/Continue/Stop/Clock

If you want to sync Sonar [slave] to the E-Mu [master], you can do
that. Set the E-mu to send clock. Set Sonar options accordingly.
Also look in Options | Global | Timecode tab. You probably will not
have to change anything there, but I mention it just in case you
really get into doing fancy things with MTC or MIDI Sync--later on
down the road.

MAKE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE A MIDI CLOCK FEEDBACK LOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps you get the most out of Sonar and your XL-7. But
really, for getting the drum patterns into Sonar, use e-loader.

PS: If at some time you want to record E-Mu arps or riffs into
Sonar, you can do that with the E-Mu as master. Check the Tips and
Tricks files and the archives for how to do this.
