Re: [xl7] how do the sounds....

2004-02-05 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

How do the sounds of the XL stack up to the PX? is there a rom that is the
same as the XL that can be added?

>>>Hey Aaron, do you (err..did you) post on nubreaks? Name looks
familiar.... Anyway, the XL-7 has more trance oriented sounds for lack of
a better description, though of course it's all about the context you use
them in too. The PX_7 is mainly drums, though it does include quiet a few
other sounds too and you could easily do a whole track with just that. I
think it's important to really not look at what market they aimed each ROM
at, and focus instead on what core soudns you really need. <<<

If not what roms are in the electronic type sounds? distorted and heavy,
drone sounds, I guess you could say D&B sounds?

>>>None really sound dark and evil as they come stock from the factory
(all of them are electronic sounding IMO), but it's easy enough to make up
your own with any of the ROMs. Pretty much all the ROMs have the basic
sine, tri, square waveforms on them, and at the end of the day that's all
you need to do amazing things. <<<

thanks, sorry to be a pest to you all.

>>>Not at all, it's just really hard to answer the "what ROM do I get"
question without knowing what you're looking for, what you have, what
you'd ideally like, etc. Or should I say, pratty much any rom can be made
to produce sounds vastly outside of the audience for which it was
intended. You could make straight up happy melodic trance with the MP-7,
you can make purely ambient soundscapes with the PX-7, and you could make
dark ass evil DnB with any of them, given enough creativity and time spent
learning the Preet programming. If you're not the type of person who uses
Preset patches the way they are, then the type of ROM you get (within
limits and with some exceptions like the orchestral stuff) is largely
irrelevant.

If you like to make your own sounds, then I would say the best thing you
can do is go to a store that sells these, select the very last preset
which is an initialized one (scroll real hard right with the dial). Then,
enter Preset edit (called Preset at the very top by the dial), press the
track 1 mute button twice, and just listen to the base waveforms instead
of the presets. That will give you a much better idea of what type of
sounds you'll have at your disposal, without the genre specific preset
programming. <<<
