Re: [xl7] Various Questions

2002-01-07 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

1. Does it groove ? I mean really groove. Is it as solid as MPC 60 or
Atari. What are the groove options ? Is it just a swing percentage or
something a bit more creative ? Can you push 2 and 4 and stuff like that?
If you input live, will it quantize the next time around ? Can you opt out
of that option ?

>>>There is no Groove quantize featuer ont eh XL-7, only a shuffle
quantize. You can specify the amount of shuffle and the percent that the
quantize will be applied, that's it. You have to save the pattern once
the quantize is applied, so you can't turn it on and off. <<<

2. Can you have different length of patterns running together and looping
to fit ?

>>>You can only have one pattrn playing at a time, but you get up to 32
midi channels in that. Each pattern can bve up to 32 measure long too,
and you can chain them together to form songs if you need longer ones.
<<<<

3. Can you tap the tempo live ?

>>>Yes, although like on most boxes, it's not terribly accurate. It'll
work live though once you get the hang of it.<<<

4. I read that you could put your own sounds in a flash SIMM. How do you
fill it up ? I own an E-Synth not an Ultra, could I make a 32M bank and
get a dealer to update my Flash.

>>>Yeah you need a Emu sampler to do it. As for your dealer, that's up
them, they certainly don't ahve to let you use a store sampler, but I bet
most would. My dealer said I could come in any time and play with the Emu
samplers if I needed to do this, since he knows I only use soft samplers
now a days. You'll need to spend some time setting up the keymapping and
stuff, so it's not like you could just bring him a bunch of samples and
say "burn these to flash for me". It takes some prep work if you want
quality sounds. <<<

Are there any other way ?

>>>Not yet, but we're still hoping that something will come in the future.
<<<

How difficult is it really ?

>>>Once you set up the samples in the sampler (which is the same as
working with any sampler, in terms of difficulty) it's super easy and
fast. <<<

Could I then play, say a piano, accross the keyboard as the sequencer is
running and record a sequence of it ?

>>>Yes<<<

5. Can you assign a paremeter chang, say a filter frequency, to a group of
tracks or instruments ? Even the whole machine ?

>>>You'd have to record it seperately for each track, but yes you could do
it. <<<

6. What is going in the headphones ? Could it be possible for live
purposes to preview a track or even listen to something you play in before
let it go to the main busses ?

>>>I wish! No groove box does this yet I'm afraid, even though they're
all marketed at DJ's and the like. It would be a great feature to have,
but as of right now the headphone mimics the main outs. <<<
