Bad Timing?!?

2003-12-17 by kenrider@epowerc.net

Hello. I just recently joined the board, and was expecting to hold
off a while before posting anything. I got started looking at xx-7 E-
mu's to replace an old Drumtracs that died and an SR-16 loaner, when
I realized that the sequencing capabilities might let me automate my
AKAI DPS recorder. The more I read, the more attractive the xx-7's
became. Because I was really interested in good traditional
drum/percussion sounds more than Techno/Hip-Hop, I decided to go
ahead and get a PX-7, possibly adding the other ROMs later. Tomorrow
I pickup the PX-7 at a UPS terminal; for the last two days, after
purchasing it, I see that E-mu is going out of business!!
Originally, I would have waited 'til I had some experience with the
PX-7, and tried to bring something a bit more operational to the
discussion (in my case it would have been lots of questions, not
answers!) but now I really need to get a sense now of how reliable
these are, what kind of service problems I might expect and,
generally, just any information that would help me understand what
I'm looking at if the warranty on this folds up immediately. It took
me a while to arrive at the decision to purchase the PX-7, and it
(and the XL/MP) just seem like amazing machines/instruments; this
makes the death knell even more disconcerting. This whole thing has
a deja vu quality about it. Last year, at almost this same time, I
bought the AKAI, which turned up bad out of the box. Before I could
get it repaired, AKAI went under - at least temporarily. A grim
time, and inducing a little extra paranoia into this current
situation for me. So, pardon my starting off on this topic, but I
would appreciate your thoughts on the durability and longevity of the
E-mu 7's. ...and I'm still really looking forward to it showing up
tomorrow, regardless!!
Thanks, Ken
(BTW, I've got a closet full of Beta VCR equipment and a room full
of old NeXT computers; you'd think I'd have learned a lesson
somewhere along the line!) ;)
