OK it was the Dyslexia for sure. 

If you can't tell already, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. 

The oder is coming from one of the actual joystick mechanisms and the "right up-down" is not functioning but "side to side" is. I am hoping that if I replace the TL074CN or solder a new resistor somewhere all will be well again.

I am still totally heart broken. I mean dark self loathing funk and on my normally wonderful wedding anniversary to boot. 

Luckily, a call into Grant a post on Muffwiggler which caught Josh's attention means someone will help me and I will stop feeling sick.

the pinout depicts the HOLES not the pins. This has bitten me right in the dyslexiass too.

I'm sure Grant will very calmly tell what has happened and what to do. 

The interesting thing is that although the actual joystick smells fried the two pots measure up fine. So it's something between the "Up down" jack and the mechanism.  

Could be the IC which of course is not one that the local Radioshack carries anymore.

If anyone has an idea please let me know.
