used system question

used system question

2009-09-14 by revmutt

As many of us have bought both new and used modules I thought I would put out this question that has been tugging at me.

Where are the original cabinets?

I don't know how many systems had them, the small one from the sculpture studio sold last year but that;s the only one I can recall.

I personally have about 3 very early modules from two different sources and in neither case did the previous owner have a cabinet.

Perhaps this is too much of a collector or fan question or topic but as someone who has an enormous pride in my own Wiard, I always enjoy history.

DOG!

PS I am still looking to finish off my second row, if you are selling an Envelator or Wogglebug please get in touch offlist

The Wiard 300 system really didn't have a standard cabinet. There exists a metal bracket (in the blue finish) that was available (and maybe still is) that allowed one to mount a six
module system in a standard 19" 6U cabinet. Also, Grant had a few custom cabinets made for customers but they were all "one-offs".

My system is in the standard blue frames. It's the one off system cases that I am curious about.

I don't know about the numbers in which things were produced but I would imagine that there are not that many modules without arrows on the jacks or ones that glow under black light (do I have that one correct?)

I've seen photos of a few cabinets that some early systems went out in, what I want to know is are all of those systems intact or are there loose cabinets rotting in barns.

I had one of the original Wooden Cabinets with the dual joy stick controller mounted below the modules. That cabinet went to Sweden (I think).

One of the many things I love about the Wiard system is the lack of prefab case solutions - we get to see these lovely blue modules appear in a wide variety of different places, sometimes surprising, sometimes melded in with very different sorts or equipment, and (not often enough) sometimes in wonderfully unique custom enclosures or cabinets. Always however reflecting the individual personality and quirks of the musician who uses it.

I think that forcing the user to come up with a suitable mounting solution makes the system more personal and streamlined into the unique needs, personality and workflow of each owner. Where there's a will, there's a Wiard......

Now that my system is nearing completion, I'm very excited about the final stage (before a lifetime of exploring and learning about this monster!) of realising the housing that I have been slowly refining in my mind for about two years now. I am a month or two away from sending my CAD drawings for a custom desktop case off to a woodwork manufacturer who will hopefully turn this into a reality. I have some very cool and unique surprises incorporated in my plans for this, and promise you all that you won't have seen anything quite like it before - I hope that it will meet the lofty goal of being a suitable and fitting home for such a compelling and inspiring instrument - time will tell! I don't think for a moment that my vision can hold a candle to the insight that Grant (and so many of you other Wiard users) have into the system, but I do think it will meet all my needs and support the instrument in the fashion I feel it deserves. Stay tuned, I do hope this will all be complete by the end of the year, I feel quite strongly that it is time to stop focusing on building synthesizers and devote my time to using them and learning as much as I can from them.

I totally agree, I am all in favor of expressing one's self in an instrument's cabinetry. I think that the instrument should reflect the user and how it is used, with thought put into both playability and it's visual appeal.

I have asked around if there were blue prints or sketches so I could have a place to start with but alas they are hidden in deep storage.

I am still undecided on what I want to do for my own vision but some of my ideas have been sorely frowned on by friends for being too psychedelic or not classic enough.

I posed this question because I was curious as to where the cases went as I would imagine anyone who had an early system and kept it would have out grown the case.
