Wiard 300 Series able to stand on own two feet?

Wiard 300 Series able to stand on own two feet?

2007-06-15 by Mark

Hi, I started ordering my 300 Series modules plus one rack. Being a
fairly quick person I see there are more modules than can be fitted
within one rack. Medium term funding means 2 racks are probably not
possible. So I've been agonising over which 6 modules to go for.

But I vaguely remember the modules can be physically stand alone..did I
dream that? In which case I would probably go for the one rack and one
or two modules as stand alones until maybe funds can stretch to more..

can anyone confirm?

many thanks, Mark

mark,
yes,300`s can be used "freestanding". i wouldn`t suggest it as a long-term solution but will be adequate to get you going.
best,
dave

sure, i had only one rack and 2 spares for a while and it worked out
fine.
They just sit at an angle, just be careful when patching so they
don't get
pulled and fall over. I guess you could get two pieces of wood to
screw
them into for stability.

Hi Mark
i'll second that, with emphasis. i cannot accurately address the
content of your dreams but i can perhaps try to summon up a repressed
memory...
Let's set the wayback machine all the way to the dawn of Wiardness-
Message 25- August of 2001, during Wiard's 'summer of love' when Grant
dreamed of the 'Wiggle Box' and you could still wear your shoes all
the way through the airport!

Grant tells it best in message 25. But i have to add that i'm glad
to see this question revived in post-modern 2007 because it bears on
the issue of a Wiard 'System'. \
In 2000, i procured three 300 modules: an envelator, a sequantizer,
and an Omni Filter. Nary an oscillator in the bunch!***. But Grant
demonstrated how i could patch these 3 modules into an
LFO-VCO-waveshaper-VCF-VCA voice.
One half of the envelator ,set slow, is the LFO. It controls the other
half-envelator which is set to audio range. The end pulse of the audio
envelator drives the clock of sequantizer which performs as a divided
, stepped wave gen. these two signals are mixed into the Filter and
one side of the cross-fader on the envelator provides a final stage VCA...
That's with three modules...none of them a VCO! (at least by name).
(and none of them a wogglebug...that hadn't been invented yet!)

i've been asked by quite a few folks to recommend a 'desert island'
Wiard and i reflexively shout "WoggleBug!" but on reflection and
experience i'd have to say the envelator is an incredibly versatile
and useful module; one that i seem to use every time i create a
timbre. One of my favorite modules of all time is the Serge Dual
Universal Slope Generator. The Envelator picks up where that classic
gadget left off and surpasses it.

sorry for yet another of my tedious screeds but your question just got
me thinking!

best,
-doc

by way of disclaimer i will confess that , at the time i got my
original 3 300's i already had piled up a lot of other synth modules
but Grant urged me to explore the possibilities available with just
those 3 devices...it was GREAT advice...and i was deeply impressed
(enough to buy more and more!) (nice work Professor!)

A 300 module can lean on it's rear enclosure, if the
instrument is studio use only, a cabinet may not be
required. The back sides of the bottom portion jack
field and top most led section and the are exposed
however, Maybe you might wish to join the modules
together with a rail. I find it to be quite playable
at that angle. A wood enclosure should be simple
enough.
