modular protection for live performance

2006-06-13 by the finger

Hello hello,

how many of you are using your (Frac) modulars in live performance? What kind of crazy
cases are peopole using out there? I plan on making a road worthy case for my stuff
eventually, but first need more modules. Until then it's the bulkyjunky SKB...

try taking a DIY 'electronium' with exposed PCB's on a plane!
Much more dangerous objects than eyebrows are raised!
i've learned to always include a small battery-powered speaker, and i
learned to play "Mary had a little lamb" and the bugle call for
"Charge!" on every gadget i ever try to take on a plane. i've had to
resort to a short bit of airport busking to prove that one can play
music on 'that thing' more than a few times!
and, of course i arrange to be at the airport LONG before my flight
leaves if i have a synth in tow.

I use a 12-space SKB case for my frac-based live rig, and I only use that setup for gigs I can drive to. For flying, I take my Doepfer portable suitcase, which I handle as a carryon bag. I miss using the frac setup sometimes when I’m traveling: to me it’s like having a Strat locally, but taking a Charvel on the road. Two different sounds, but both get the job done. (Having a Model 15 oscillator in each at least helps maintain a bit of similarity between the two systems.)

But I like the SKB I have: it’s really light considering the size and number of modules.
I’ve posted two live shots that sort of show the rig — theyR17;re from a concert at the Maybeck Recital Hall, Berkeley, CA ‘05 with Hamburg-based trumpeter Birgit Ulher. (We released a CD last year, Sputter, that features duets of analog synth/trumpet, with a little bowed percussion thrown in for good measure.)

<>;

It sure does. Especially when I leave it patched!

Fortunately, there are no sharp edges on it (unless you remove a panel). I was almost stopped from taking my bass bow on a plane in Frankfurt this year because it has a pointed end.
“What if you try to stab someone with it?” the woman asked me.
“Now why would I want to do something like that?” I replied.
Then she went to get her supervisor...

I bet that gets some raised eyebrows at the airport security.

This sounds like a perfect task for the PSIM, i.e., storing the "Mary
had a little lamb" cv sequence to pass security...!

(chuckle)
now the ---PSIM--- is involved in this thread (!?!?!?!?)
=)

when we go OT .... we go: Oh!!!! friggin' Teeee!

a cunning plan indeed, Mr. Chang,
....and it would work too....if any of my misbegotten little beasts
were scalable to 1V/oct!!!!!
(hey! it ain't like i'm some kinda GRANT RICHTER or somethin'!!!)
;'>

but alas,
this is one of those neolithic instances where the old human gray
matter plus those funny looking ears (and a little muscle memory) is
the most efficient(and portable) solution!
