Since I have sold a Wiard system for non-financial reasons, I can give an
answer to this question. I had a basic system with the usual 6 modules and
the joystick controller. While it was a beautiful looking and sounding
system, I had the following issues with it:
1. Inconsistent labeling - some knobs were labeled above the knob, some
below. I think this might have been true with some of the patch points as
well but I can't remember. This was frustrating for me.
2. Extremely high functional density - This is the biggest feature and
non-feature of the Wiard 300 series, IMO. Each module has so many features
packed into it, that it is tough to find and sometimes remember them all.
The dense patch bay on the modules made it very hard for me to find and use
functions. For example, the VCO has an AR and VCA that I would forget were
there. Also, the envelator just never clicked for me as an ADSR. I liked
the VC AR functions and all of the things that were like the Serge DSG but
linking the two parts always had me looking for the manual.
I absolutely love the 1200 series Wiard modules with their single function
model and consistent layout. I have at least one of all of these modules.
This is all *my opinion* and only matters to me so please don't take this as
an attack on Wiard 300 systems. Mine didn't work for me and I have lots of
other modular synths. I know that there are lots of people very happy with
there systems and that's great. The person who bought my system has been
very happy with it and has expanded on it considerably. Synths, especially
modular synths, can be very personal so it can be expected that they might
not work for everyone.
