Multichannel mix encoding update

Multichannel mix encoding update

2005-01-29 by Gary Chang

At the NAMM show, I saw an old acquaintence, Peter Otto, who is also a
CalArtian who studied with M. Subotnick. He is presently a professor
at UCSD. He has a company named Immersive Media Research and they are
releasing a DTS encoder which will take your multichannel mixes and
allow you to burn CDs and DVDs that, will play back in 5.1 on typical
home systems.

I know that this is nothing new, but they plan to sell it for $129!!!!

Download the beta version at

I`m using the Minnetonka Surcode CD encoder for years, it was released
at least 4 years ago and does exactly what you described: encode files
to DTS that can be burn in AudioCD, then using the optical output from
your cd player/dvd player to a dts decoder lets you hear the
multichannel mix. Its great:

I am familiar with that software - I have been using the KindaLoud and
Sonic foundry surround encoder also, but none of these products are
only $129. Most are $300 and up.

I thought that this price is a breakthrough...

also, the www.im-research.com is for OSX. Minnetonka did just release
Discwelder bronze for Mac. Now we need Meridian Lossless Packing. Seems
messed up that they want to collect so much for this "standard."
thanks Gary!

Re: Multichannel mix encoding update

Josue,

You are right... I didn't notice that Surcode's price had dropped
since October.

What I am trying to promote here is the fact that we, as a community,
can now share our multichannel music with each other via this type of
encoding software and CDs - when I first posted a message regarding
this, most of the pricing that I quoted was true.

The only difference between the Minnetonka and IMR product is that the
Vortex Surround Encoder (IMR) is an OSX 10.3 application.

Yes, just just wanted to clarify the thing.
I`ve contacted IMR about the Surround designar and Sorround mixer
applications, those seem pretty interesting too, but only macos for
now... May be they port it to PC...

Best Regards,

Josue.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
