analog computers

2004-10-23 by davevosh

hello to all -
a while back someone had posted something related to the
(delightful) "j.a.g." and mentioned analog computers.
now, i know grant has one, i have a comdyna gp6 as does at least one
other person on the list.
my question - does anyone else ? i`d be interested in hearing about
how they are being used -
thanks !
best,
dave

Music synthesizers are actually a subset of analog computing in
general. The combination of a multiplier and an integrator gives
you voltage control. For example you can patch up an EML state
variable filter with two multipliers, two integrators and a summer.

What is really needed is an analog computer designed explicitly
for electronic music. That would make each integrator voltage
controlled with some over all routing control. I did this with my
Lab Electronics model X3 "Analog Computer Trainer".

http://www.labelectronics.com/

by replacing each integrator input resistor with a Vactrol. I
uploaded a picture of a stock trainer to the photos section. I'll add
a picture of the modified trainer later.

I have used it to prototype different filters. An analog computer
can act as a test bench for weird filter designs.

Dave,

How do you like the Comdyna?

As a matter of fact, I almost bought a Comdyna, but was concerned
about the relative restricted range of function when interfaced to a
10v vc system, so I haven't yet, waiting for a wizard to appear to
magically address these issues.

Aside from the obvious logic circuits and how they are useful in pulse
and control voltage patches, I am very interested in filter design. I
could see investing in an analog computer just to have a multi channel
VC filter patch that I could tweek.

Gary

what about the comdyna gp-10s music? it's 10v.
what are the other issues?
