exploding Wogglebug patch

2002-12-10 by Doug Pearson

Last night, I finally got some time in the studio
alone with the Wiard. Alas, I came nowhere
near creating an Aelortic composition for the
competition, but at least I made some cool
sounds for an acquaintence who wishes he had
a Wiard (that's OK, he already has a very nice
Buchla, Grant knows of whom I speak ... ). At
least I can remember one of the sounds I was
working on ...

In his questions about the 300-series last week,
I believe that Mike Peake was mentioning the
noise generation capabilities of the Classic
VCO vs. random output of the Wogglebug. The
two are *very* different ... the Classic VCO's
"noise" output is really clocked random voltage,
which does a decent white/pink noise
impersonation, but isn't *quite* as hefty-
sounding as a "real" analog noise generator.
OTOH, the Wogglebug can't really make white/
pink noise (if this CAN be done, somebody tell
me how!) ... there's always a smooth component
to its random output.

What the Wogglebug kicks the pants off any
"normal" white/pink/etc. noise source for, is
synthesizing explosions. Here's a simple patch:
1) On a Wogglebug, set:
The clock/LFO all the way up to the maximum rate.
Wogglebug main out -> Omni Filter in.
2) On one envelator, set:
AD response.
Attack very short (or minimum).
First +out to AMOD for exponential curve
(turn the AMOD knob all the way up).
Second +out -> Omni Filter FC1.
Set release knob to taste for length of explosion.
3) On the Omni Filter, set:
LP mode.
Cutoff all the way down.
Resonance below self-oscillating, to taste.
Adjust FC1 knob to taste for "intensity" of explosion.
Using the 12dB out vs. the "main" outs will also give different explosive
flavors.
4) Gate the envelope with the button on your
joystick controller.

The Envelator gives the necessary snappy
attack, while the Wogglebug is a much richer
audio source than the usual noise; there is some
serious rumble going on! I was shaking the
walls with a Roland KC-500, and probably
(hopefully!) pissing off the band across the
hall playing Skynyrd/Zep/BadCo covers.

Now, if only I could get somebody to interpret
what the alien voices were telling me through
it when running a different patch ...
