I think Buchla ran out of numbers. Given the feature set of the 261e it looks like a cross between the 259e and the 208 oscillators. Maybe 208e or 258e would be more appropriate? Than again, Buchla seems like a forward looking person, so moving backwards in numbering doesn't seem to fit his philosophy. Hugh knows...
