Limited patches on my K2000R

Limited patches on my K2000R

2010-06-10 by brofjw

Hi all.
I have a good condition Kurzweil K2000R I am looking to sell soon. It's such a great synth and I'm a little blue to see it go. I also have an SCSI CD-ROM drive for it (read only), and I bought a CD with something like 80,000 patches. But here's the deal: When I load banks from the CD, only about 10% of them actually play as they should. The rest just have the same split second pulse/click and nothing more. What is going on with those patches? There is no explanation in the liner notes of the CD except that maybe some of them are intended for K2500 or possibly intended for a different OS. My K2000R has the Janus version OS, I think. I also think it might be the lowest version of Janus. I'm not really sure and I'm not really very well read-up on those specs of the K2000. I may even want to keep this synth, actually! Either way, I want to get the best out of it for myself or whoever might buy it. If anyone has any wisdom to offer, please post. Thanks!

It doesn't sound like anything is wrong with your K2000R. The CD could be loading patches with keymaps that your K2k doesn't have. To verify this press edit and then the keymap soft key under the display. You may find the keymap shows "not found" or a keymap that's not in your rom. If you change the keymap to one in your synth it should play. The K2000 and the K2500 can have expansion rom's that you may not have installed in your synth. These definitely will not play.

The CD may also be loading more samples than you have sample ram available for. These will do the same thing. Press master to see the amount of sample ram available. It is listed as samples: on the top of the display page. I think 8192 for 8mb is stock.

You may contact me offlist if you need to discuss this further. I have a K2VX which is a fully expanded K2000. I also just put a new LED backlit display into a K2000R that belongs to a friend. This synth has no expansions and is V1.30J (Janus) probably just like yours. I'm waiting for a new volume pot for it from Mouser.com. His was busted, a common problem because it sticks out so far.

See ya, Fran

PerFX ROM's

2010-06-11 by Wayne Griffin

Oberheim left this bloody thing wide open, merely obscured by thin plastic film so...

If you ever get one of these the ROM's are interchangeable, mine came as Systemizer but for now is a Cyclone
