Roland D-50 : self-control issues

Roland D-50 : self-control issues

2006-12-12 by Daniel Araujo

Hi folks. I've been part of this list for a couple of years now but I
don't think I've ever posted here. I'm not a pro technician, just the
kind of guy who tries to fix everything by himself before eventually
paying up a professional.

Now to the prob: My Roland D-50 will only play notes and change patches
if externally controlled by midi. All keys and PC buttons answer to test
mode but won't serve their normal functions. In other words, they work
but they lost their ability to control the D-50, which otherwise
functions fine as a module.

Any hints? I've taken the whole thing apart, in hopes that something
just needed to be plugged back on, but found nothing too suspicious. I'm
afraid it might be motherboard-related.

I've got its service manual in PDF format, in case anyone would like to
take a look.

Thanks
Dan

try this, Get to the screen for midi function. Go to the local on /
off and turn it to ON. Voila. Russ

Thanks Russ, I checked that before I disassembled the keyboard. Unfortunately that wasn't the case.

But here's an update: after reading some posts on LA users groups, I tried to take its lithium battery off for a couple of seconds and then put it back on. Tada! My D-50 works again!

Afterwards I read on Roland's site that turning the D-50 on with "0"+"Data Transfer" pressed would clear the synth's internal memory, to "stop any unusual problems occurring in the unit". That's probably what happened when I took the lithium battery off. So, corrupted memory sounds like a good guess to me.

Thanks
Daniel

ahah. Yanking the battery is usually my last ditch effort when all else fails. Carry On. Russ
