But here's an update: after reading some posts on LA users groups, I tried to take its lithium battery off for a couple of seconds and then put it back on. Tada! My D-50 works again!
Afterwards I read on Roland's site that turning the D-50 on with "0"+"Data Transfer" pressed would clear the synth's internal memory, to "stop any unusual problems occurring in the unit". That's probably what happened when I took the lithium battery off. So, corrupted memory sounds like a good guess to me.
