New Oddy

2006-10-25 by iwishiwascrying

So i recieved an odyssey and everything is fine with it except i
cannot get any sound to come from the second osc. Im not sure what the
problem could be or if there is anything i can do myself to fix this.
I live in a place where there arent many people who know how to fix a
synth let alone an arp. Thanks for the help!

It could be dirt in the slider on the mixer control. You could try using an electrical spray cleaner (Contact Control Cleaner and Lubricant from Radioshack) and working the slider back and fourth. I had a single oscillator issue like thin on mine and this seemed to fix it along with cleaning the frequency coarse adjustment. I hope this helps.

The slider could be bad but it think it's most likely that the chip
in the oscillator circuit is bad. That is usuall most common. John

Looking at the Odyssey tech manual, the only "chip" connected with VCO
2 on the Revision 1 board is a quad input NAND gate, which should be a
simple fix. On the Revision 2 board, there's also an LM1458 and a
CA3086, which might be harder to find but not impossible. You don't
mention what kind of Odyssey you've got: I, II or III?

There's nothing on the Ody that is special; it's mostly discrete
components, apart from the "sealed-in-resin" filter modules.

Anyway, I doubt that your problem is a "chip". More likely a
transistor or diode.

Go to http://www.arpodyssey.com for the tech manual.

Good luck.

You should have the Rev. 2 boards.

Honestly, the total cost of buying every single IC, transistor, diode,
capacitor and resistor on the board would be about equal to 1 hour's
labour cost for an electronics tech. If you've got any facility with
a soldering iron and can read a schematic, get the schematics, heat up
the iron and fix it yourself. (Kevin Lightner just went ballistic! :) )

Test it by listening to the output of the ring modulator alone, which
is hardwired to include the output of both VCOs. If the ring mod
works, then the oscillator is putting out audio but it's not getting
into the mixer, which narrows down your problem -- the most likely
culprit then is a bad connection to the C board, which includes the
mixer. If the ring mod doesn't seem to work, you may have a problem
further upstream on the B board.

If none of the above makes sense to you, download a copy of the tech
manual from www.arpodyssey.com, print it out and take it and your Ody
to any reasonably competent electronic tech. It's unlikely to be
anything really major, because, like I said, all of the components are
really basic and quite easy to get at (except the sealed filter).

Good luck.

Yes it is fixable it is a common chip. I don't have thae schematics
in fron of me but I think it's a CD4001. Cheap too.
