korg 770 breath controller

2006-10-09 by korgfetischist

Hi everybody,

is there anybody out there... who has ever heard of that mysterious
breath contoller that was meant to be used with the Korg 770
synthesizer? Any idea if it was produced at all? Perhaps some
schematics? Anything else? Greetings

thomas

Back in the 80's, Korg was acquired by Yamaha. So, to answer your
question: any Yamaha breath controller will work.

Oh? Back in the 80s we were a service center for both Korg _and_ Yamaha, and
they were two completely independent operations as far as I know, with no
connection between them.

Do you know something to indicate otherwise?

Though the two lines are separate entities, they both shared the same
R&D department for a time, hence, Korg created some synths w/ breath
controller features as well as other synths that look familiar. BTW,
during that same period, Yamaha also acquired Sequential Circuits,
maker of the Prophet synth and others.....

The 770 came out in the mid-70s so no connection to Yamaha. I have one
and never heard about a breath controller. I think the original posted
may have it confusd with the 707, an FM synth form the late 80s...

Sorry, I'm really talking about the 770 from 1976! There's a picture
in the manual, saying you may connect your "mouth controller" to the
"remote"-jack. I've uploaded a scan of that part of the manual, just
to show what I'm talking about...

You are correct, sir, my bad. I thought 770 was a type-o for 707 as
you suspected. As for the mysterious mouth controller, I believe it
could be related to the Korg Pepe [MIDI controller] which was created
solely for Josef Zawinul in the 80's---rumor has it that Joe wanted a
MIDI version of his CV breath controller. I suppose if you can get
some schematics/service manual [good luck finding one] of the 770 or
if you feel adventurous with a multimeter, a rudimentary CV
mouth/breath controller can be built. I did find one service manual
at this site:
http://www.ravenware.com/music/korgman/korgman.html

But I was not able to open it---it could have been created with an
older version of Acrobat; perhaps you might have better luck with it.
