Hi John, yes that is a good idea I have done this on a Korg module although wasn’t that easy due to thickness restrictions fitted l.e.d backlight strip of amber colour as found best the original backlight consisted of a mini-pcb that had minute dual colour l.e.d.s fitted as this was not found I fitted larger type l.e.d.s in strip form and feeded them from a 12V supply taken at a point from the main board supply cct. for the moment I am unlucky as I do not have diffuser available from a scrap screen thanks for your feedback, noel From: John Rose Sent: Saturday, April 12, 2014 3:57 PM To: vintagesynthrepair@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [vintagesynthrepair] Inverter boards for keyboard LCD backlight I know this is not directly related but may give some other scope for thought. I am currently looking at replacing the EL backlights with LED based ones, the problem is that getting hold of the right size can be difficult so I am working on the idea of using the diffuser panel out of old laptop screens that can easily be cut to the desired size and then attaching some dual high output LED’s that are designed for back illumination, the LED’s are available in a variety of colours and also have a much longer life expectancy than the foils as well as doing away with the high voltages associated with the inverters. At the moment I have an Akai 3000 which has a totally dead backlight so I will probably use this as a test project and will probably go for a red backlight as I think this will be quite pleasing to look at. Maybe it's good to buy both, new EL foil and proper inverter, to be sure they will work together.
