Vintage Synth Repair

When you get a synth or effects unit that's been exposed to a smoking
environment and it's got a fan, a film of tar and other particulate matter
settles over the innards.  The fan draws in dust and the dust sticks to the
tar creating a film of dusty goo over everything.

What's the best way to clean this up?  Distilled water?  Isopropyl
alcohol?  Flux Off?   ???
