Strange Prophet 2000

Strange Prophet 2000

2008-03-25 by Ljupce Mitrovski

I just bought what I thought was the perfect lofi sampler the Prophet 2000.
I dont know if I havent worked with it but my first experince is...what a shitty sampler.
Can somebody tell me if I have a unit that doesent work properly or if it supposed to be like
this.
I bought some sample discs from wine country but they sounded terrible.
Compared to my other old school sampler the X-7000 the prophet is not so good.
Does the output bounce from the left to the right always(I put the dynamic allocation to off)or
is it something wrong.
Have somebody made some good sounds for this strange sampler???

Peace

I'm sure others on this list can explain it
better, but the P2K is not a stereo device. You
should use a mono hookup to your amp, and set the
"balance" control to 11 o'clock. If I had my P2K
book in front of me, I could explain it better, but I'm at work.
You may need to upgrade the OS (ROM) in your P2K.
The older ones may not play the samples correctly.
If you want to make your own samples, you need a
high impedance mike. Most are low impedance these days.
Remember, the P2K is 1980's technology. But it's
combination of analog and digital make it a wonderful machine today.

>>what a shitty sampler.<<

that's not nice. don't come on the list & start off with an email like
that if you want any sort of help, ok? :-)

the 2000 & 2002 are from the early 80s, & are not like a big akai or
emu where you can grab great chunks of stereo off of a CD or vinyl &
loop up the beats or whatever.

think of it instead as more like a prophet synthesizer, only with
sampled waveforms instead of oscillators. treat it as an instrument,
not a dumb audio playback device. use the analogue filters & VCA to
mould the waveforms into musical notes.

or sell it & buy an old akai instead.

the manuals & a quick user-guide are in the files section here. this
will also help to explain the way the audio outputs work in relation
to the machine's voices- it /can/ do stereo, but it wasn't designed to
& the stereo phase is hit&miss at best. I use mine more like a synth,
& have big old emus (which are very cheap now) for big stereo loops &
so forth.

duncan (something of a power-user when it comes to the 2000/2002)
