Polysix vs Mono/Poly: Frequency Content

Polysix vs Mono/Poly: Frequency Content

2013-02-17 by chipaudette

Hi All,

I own both a Mono/Poly and Polysix. I had the Mono/Poly first and, given that the two synths are of the same vintage and share much of their circuit design, I got the Polysix assuming that it would be a poly synth that sounded very similar, which is what I wanted.

When i got the Polysix, I found certain small (but important!) differences in sound. I've started to quantify the differences in the output of the two synths. If you're interested in frequency analyses and whatnot, you might choose to check out my figures and discussion...

I'm definitely interested in any comments that you might have. The boost in treble frequencies relative to the ideal sawtooth is of particular interest to me. Any theories?

Thanks,

Chip

Love it! Bravo!

If you do decide to mess about the Polysix's tuning please keep us updated
on your findings . . . with more graphs . . . and audio comparative
samples! :D

It is all down to calibration, me thinks.
The sound of the Polysix can be changed quite a lot depending on how
you calibrate the synth. Stick to the factory standard and you get one
sound - press the VCAs and you get another sound.
It is probably some differences between the synths, though.
But still: if they sound close it is all down to calibration, me thinks.

So I tried re-calibrating all the filters in my Polysix. While it didn't affect the frequency response of the synth, it should did make the high-resonance settings a lot more musical. If you're interested, here's a discussion of what I found...

I guess that I've got more investigation yet to come.
