hi everyone i have a korg ploysix background unknown but the battery
has been replaced and the boards seem to be working(leds lit).but when
i connect headphones or amp to output all i get is a faint hum,and no
sound regardless of which keys or presets i select.is this a common
fault ?.thanks any pointers in the right direction would be great.

When you click the Manual button and start fiddling with the settings -
do you hear anything ?

You do lose all stored sounds when the battery is removed. Having no
sounds can sound as you describe. B-)

So reload your sounds into the Synth and check again.

I think the Manual mode should work anyway shouldn't it ?...

Hm yeah this can be difficult. For my Juno 106 (Roland) I have a very
old backup holding the original presets (well almost) which I can only
reload when I twiddle around with some equalizer.

Nevertheless, Gil is right, in manual mode it should work.

You need to figure out whether the CPU is working or not.

I only own a Trident MK2 but before I fixed it, the CPU seemed to crash:
Several presets were activated at the same time according to the LEDs
and the sounds were nothing more but noise.

In the Trident playing seems to be independent from controlling. This
means that apparently the synthesizer gets used by the keyboard
controller CPU but it does not produce any useful sounds because the
main CPU doesn't set the parameters right.

One way to see that the main CPU has crashed is when it doesn't react
when you select a program or switch to manual mode.

Apart from that: Check in the manual mode again by setting a simple
sound manually.

no sound

2009-08-27 by imbuedblue

I recently received a dead PolySix with the dreaded battery leakage problem. The battery was replaced and the damaged traces were cut out and replaced with 30AWG wire. Currently when the synth turns on, the LEDs briefly light up and then go dark except for Program 1 and Bank 1.

There is no sound, however. Only hiss. When I turn up the volume pot, the hiss gets louder.

The voice LEDs (D10 on KLM-366) do not light when keys are pressed.

How should I proceed?

Thanks in advance,
Alex

RE: [PolySix] no sound

Hi Alex,

The lights all coming on and going off again (apart from B-A, P-1) is the
reset line /REST dropping low momentarily, which is normal behaviour.

If none of the voice lights are illuminating at all I would suspect a
problem somewhere in the keyboard assigner CPU section. Does this happen in
both poly and unison mode? Does the arpeggiator drive the voices when
switched on? I have to admit I have had a Polysix in before where all the
voices were dead and the 8049-217 (CPU) was red hot and needed to be
replaced.

Have a poke around and let us all know what you find.

Cheers,

Andy

A good idea at this point would probably be to see if the problem is with
the keyboard or with the key assigner section.

But first I would check if the KLM-366 gets all the correct voltages from
the power supply. Even if the voltages were correct at the supply this
doesn't guarantee that there isn't a problem with a connector.

The key contacts for the Polysix and related instruments can occasionally
get to the point that very few keys work at all. Remove one or two keys so
that you can press the rubber strip directly. Does that make a difference?

If that doesn't help as well I would try the following:

- remove the keyborad connector from the KLM-366
- use a small wire to repeatedly short the second pin from the right and
the second pin from the left in the KLM-366 connector (there are of course
more combinations)

Does that result in the voices being activated?

It's the keyboard. I'll clean everything up with some denatured alcohol. Any other suggestions?

I take this as "The Polysix makes sound if I press the rubber bubbles
directly"?

It might not be such a good idea to clean the rubber parts with alcohol, too.

My suggestion: Disassemble the keyboard by removing the keyboard PCB. Then
very carefully remove the contact strips from the PCB. Make sure that the
little pins are not getting damaged in the process!
Gently wash the contact strips in water with some dish liquid. Clean them
in clean water, dry them; and perhaps gently (!) dry the conductive rubber
parts with a paper towel.
In the mean time you can clean the contacts on the PCB with denaturated
alcohol. Make sure you don't use any abrasive stuff!
Reassmble everything and make sure that the rubber "bubbles" are all in the
correct places.
With a bit of luck this wil already have taken care of the keyboard
problem. Sometimes a second cleaning might be needed.

Yes, of course, the alcohol wouldn't be good on the rubber. I've cleaned all the gold contacts with denatured alcohol and will probably clean again before putting everything back together. The rubber pads have been cleaned with distilled water and Dawn dish soap. I've got a MG Chemicals rubber repair kit--that I've used successfully in the past on a different keyboard--waiting in the wings.
