Fixed Power Supply but still no sound

Fixed Power Supply but still no sound

2005-10-05 by lnz2166

I back again. I was able to track and find the problems with the power
supply. Replaced the Regulator and transistor and my outputs are good
and stable. Powered it up and I still have no sound. CAn anyone tel me
if this is a Battery issue. I would think a battery leak problem would
not allow you to store but would it cause NO SOUND? Looking for some
areas to next look at.

PS: wen i press the keys I do get the LED DIODES lighting up so
something is happening.\\

Any advise would be appriciated.

Has the battery leaked? Have you already fixed it? Without the battery
and with all parts around the battery ok, the Polysix functions 100%,
it only can't remember stored patches when turned off and on again.

My battery leakage wasn't so bad, so I'm not sure what happens when
it's too severe.
But I've just discovered a transistor with brownish/greenish legs on
the KLM-366. I'm not sure if this comes from the battery leakage. But I
know the Polysix was standing around for a long time, perhaps leaned to
a wall. Knowing this it might be possible that some of the liquid
dripped down and fell on that transistor.

So it might be worth it to check basically every part for visible
changes/damages. If you have already done that, I'm sorry, I've got no
idea.

The battery leak on my Polysix was very hard to see, but it damaged
the memory circuit board and the nearest chip underneath so that I
had complete sound loss and several memory lights lighting up at the
same time. The damage screwed up the memory board so that the poor
thing didn't know what settings to use and went silent instead.

Just in case someone doesn't know this yet: if you have a Polysix
that has never had the battery replaced, DO IT NOW. The battery is
more than 20 years old and just waiting to leak corrosively all over
the memory circuit board. If it hasn't done so yet, you've been lucky
- but it won't last. I found this out the hard way (luckily I had my
patches backed up just recently and a soldering wizard of a friend to
do the repair job properly).

Now it works perfectly again with a modern metal hydride battery, but
it was a much bigger soldering & chip-replacing job than just
replacing the old battery before it leaks. There are excellent
Polysix battery leak repair instructions on Old Crow's pages (thanks
a 1000000): http://www.oldcrows.net/~oldcrow/synth/korg/polysix/

Correct -- even in Manual mode, it won't work.
The Polysix (& other "memory" synths) runs ALL of its control voltages thru
the CPU -- any problem on the data or address lines will be reflected in
the synth audio section.
I've never seen a battery-damaged P6 that didn't need at least SOME trace
repair -- if you're fairly comfortable with reading schematics & tracing
circuitry, this is do-able. If you're not, you might want to call in some
help.

--- Thanks for your response. If I read you comments right, you say
that if the traces to the processor or IC31 are damaged you possibly
will not get any sound? Does this also hold true if you try to play
it in "manual mode"?
I did take out the old battery and tied in a fresh battery to see if
I could get sound out of it but no luck. There was a little acid
leak which I cleaned up and did a "quick" continuity on the traces
around the chip which seemed to be fine. Obviously that does not mean
traces underneath or the vias are good. Please confirm that in deed
if traces are bad even if in maunal mode I will not get sound.
Thanks.

--- Thanks once again for your quick response. This will "hopefully"
narrow diagnosing time for me. Looks like I'll better get my
soldering iron and a wire out.

OK, I was giving a simplified answer. To be more exact, on a memory type
synth, all CVs are multiplexed & turned into digital information; this
information is then demultiplexed & turned back into analog voltages to
feed the various synth functions (this is best understood by looking at the
CPU page of the schematics). This may seem like a cumbersome way of doing
things, but it's what allows the synth to memorize & store control settings.

The point was that ANY problem with the digital circuitry (CPU, CPU
support, DAC, ADC, etc) can cause problems or non-function in the analog
synth circuits. If you don't have a scope (or at least a logic probe) to
look at the various data and address lines, repairing a PolySix can be a
lengthy & difficult proposition.
Normally, most problems with the P6 have to do with shorted, distorted or
missing data or address lines, which totally bugger the audio circuitry.

So is this what makes the Polysix have DCO's?

Today I checked the resonance voltage at CN05-7 and found out it's
rastered, because I couldn't set it to exact 0V. It jumped in about
50-60mV steps, no matter how carefully I turned the knob.

Is that a result of the signals going through the CPU?
