Mellotrons ?

Mellotrons ?

2010-10-12 by gino wong

There is too much surface noise in this group.

There are lots of places to go on the net to spew forth on politics, religion, guns etc... Probably, even at grade level.

I have seen other groups hijacked by off med psych patients, drunks, druggers, home schooled intellectuals and others who make the traffic on the group go down to almost nothing because nothing on the subject is being discussed without being sullied (ruined, fucked up).

There are smart people who are turning away from this group because it is veering into useless territory.

You all know what I mean and most of you know better when you are not high or whatever.
Sorry for the vent ..

Apart from the typing error in my last post, I think Gino is making a valid point as everything seems to dissolve exchanges of ribald wit but without the wit or the ribaldry! There are many absent friends and it would be good to entice them back. I am sure some are watching.

To my mind, we're here because we enjoy talking about mellotrons and things related. If some members don't wish to or cannot confine themselves to that, they really should leave.

I agree; one of my favorites too !

Their last release "A Victory for Common Sense" (2009) is also worth checking out.

They called the lp Pinafore Days in the US. It is required listening.

When I was in the UK for school I saw them, it was weird, like Clockwork Orange with farmers, produce and trashcan lid percussion.

Wonderful, bravely creative band.

Chamberlin M return rings?

Chamberlin return rings- does anyone out there understand how they work?
I'm not having problems with them buy they are
mesmerising. How do they engage to pull the tapes back like that ?! Any of
you engineers or technicians have a grasp of this mystery.
P.s just underwent the rigors of changing tapes.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Chamberlin M return rings?

2010-10-13 by Pomeroy RH Ranch

Thomas -
Don't you just love these things?!?
I was just chatting with Richard at the Mellodrama screening in Hollywood with a question about a screeching from the spool rings (so bad it comes through the signal...) The rings are lined with felt that has been lightly charred. They are under tension to rewind (at the same strength no matter the length of the note played) all the time. The tension is (carefully) adjustable with the small allen-headed screw set into the ring which you access by running the tape to the end and shutting off power.
The solution to the screeching is a very light - and extremely careful - application of light oil on the felt (preferably with the spool off the spindle).

Thank you for passing along that information. Now if I'm faced with any
screeching I'll have some idea what to do! It is interesting comparing the
different direction the two companies went to, each with it's merit and
the evoltuions that occured. Charred felt?! who would have thought!

Thanks, FRANK-
Speak of the devil, I was in Fort Stanton Cave in New Mexico most of last week. Maximum cellar, methinks!
Google Fort Stanton Cave Snowy River for more info on the project. We just finished work on a 44 foot access shaft to allow easier access to the Snowy River section. Very tiring. Lots of good people involved.

Very sad to hear of his death. I enjoyed debating him on and off list. My condolences go out to all who knew him

......Stackridge's God Speed the Plough. Produced by George Martin, this is a favourite of mine with a big 'tron choir moment in the middle. Grand stuff from the days of yawning chasms of reverb and fleshed out arrangements. TriffiK me thinks.

To my mind, we're here because we enjoy talking about mellotrons and things related. If some members don't wish to or cannot confine themselves to that, they really should leave.

Hi all-
I had never heard of Stackridge before, but the youtube sample of "Godspeed the Plough" is very good. I will definitely look into this. Thanks!

I agree; one of my favorites too !

Their last release "A Victory for Common Sense" (2009) is also worth checking out.

Start with Stackridge, Pinafore Days (Man in Bowler Hat), Friendliness, Later recordings are different, less fun I think. New recordings are worthy. Something... is a great song.
