M400 motor rebuild

M400 motor rebuild

2010-07-26 by zogher

Hi group,

I am in the midst of going through my entire M400 and making sure everything is up to snuff. I just finished recapping the power supply, now I turn my attention to the motor.

Upon inspection, the brushes look worn, one moreso than the other. Anyone know of a source for new motor brushes?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris, if you have any kind of SMS control card and you replaced more than
the two caps closest to the front (or farthest from the mains socket), you
wasted money. They don't do anything.

An obvious question. Why are the caps there if they don't do anything?

Hi Frank,

Thanks for your concern, but no money was wasted =). I rewired the power supply for an SMS type controller card, as this pic shows (before the new caps were installed).

Note: this shot was also taken before the mod to move the fuse before the power switch.

Now, what about those motor brushes? =)

Thanks,
Chris

Good work!

Unless the brushes are nearly gone, I wouldn't replace them. Clean the
commutator and leave them be, they are well seated. I have yet to have to
replace any so far. If you remove them, make sure you restore them in their
exact positions.

Here is are a couple of power supply photos showing how nicely they clean
up. Typically I test the old capacitors to see if they will meet specs. I
have a capacitor tester and if they work well, I leave them. I am more
concerned with the capacitors on the WME boards or old PMLs and the caps on old
SMS boards. You might consider replacing that old Bulgin mains socket with a
 nice IEC socket.

all the other electronics were necessary for 220 volts and the CMC.

I'm also guessing that they built a ton of power supplies before creating the SMS boards and so did only the minimum mods required to accommodate it.
