Mac - M-Tron Pro

Mac - M-Tron Pro

2012-07-30 by ClayE

I took the advice and have M-Tron Pro. The Streetly tapes are fab. I did not know that other sound samples were included as well. (The ARP Pro Soloist fuzz guitar - Nice!) I was surprised to find all of the presets and 'artist' presets.

I am now looking for a good, easy to learn Mac host app. A good sequencer / recorder / editor. I don't want to use any acid style loops. Products like Apple's Logic and Propellerhead's Reason seem to include loads of preset loops and phrases. I don't want any of that. Ableton? I'm not good at learning new stuff. Cubase? MOTU's Digital Performer? I think I could probably figure them out. Pro Tools just scares me for some reason.

Hi Clay, Ableton is really easy to use and is a very versatile sequencer/launch platform. I got the basics working in an afternoon-it's very intuitive and has user friendly graphics. It's the easirst one I've messed around with. There are lots of things it can do as you get used to it but the basics are a breeze...

I would recommend Reaper. It's less than 12meg, works on practically anything (old, new, OSX, PPC, PC), is stable, well supported, and is incredibly powerful.

I work with Pro Tools, Cubase , Reaper and several others. The suggestion of Reaper is a very good one. I find I tend to use it more
then the other programs because of the fluid workflow. As a bonus it is priced lower than the others but don't let that make
you think it is less capable as a result. I work with Pro Tools on the Mac in one studio and don't really like it but use all of those
programs (Including Pro Tool on the PC. Reaper also has a very good support forum and the creators listen to the feedback of
their users. They issue very frequent updates to correct problems or add features.

Have Fun,

Gary

Straightforward? DP is pretty solid, AU implementation is stable, more pro than Logic and more composer friendly than ProTools. I use DP more than any other DAW. Ableton is probably a little quirky for you, if you're not good at learning new stuff..deep yet simple. DP's editing is simpler and more comprehensive than Ableton. I do love Ableton LIVE though. At some point if you decide to get into it, it'll ReWire into DP or ProTools. ProTools only renders audio in REAL time. Big, big drawback. Digi says it sounds better, but I think that's plain 'ol crap. I can't hear the difference in any A/B comparisons I've done, and I've done them to shut up my ProTools using colleagues. ProTools is expensive too.

Don't discount Reason 6.5. Great bang for the buck, outstanding sound quality and functionality, very easy to learn. No AU or VST implementation though. Al;though I think they have a mellotron player now for their Reason Rack format? Martin?

Fritz,

You are absolutely correct. After using Pro Tools in Mac and PC format I can tell you it doesn’t sound better than anything else.

I think the thing that is important is finding something that has a workflow you are comfortable with. If you want to work in

major studios learning ProTools is important just as learning AutoCAD is important in design work. That doesn’t mean that

it is the best (or most financially practical) software for you to use. As long as I can transfer my tracks in broadcast wave format

I can track in Pro Tools (PC or MAC) and mix and/or master in Cubase, Reaper, DP, whatever and visa versa. I don’t think any DAW

software sounds better or worse than any other when configured the same. It should be able to record the tracks neutrally.

The mic’s you use and the post –processing, mixing, and mastering determine how it sounds in the end. Any software using co-processing

cards (ProTools HD, MOTU, etc.) has the advantage of letting you use more tracks and plug-ins due to its off-loading of tasks from the main

CPU. This shouldn’t be confused with the capabilities of the basic DAW software. IMHO, YMMV, Yadda,Yadda, etc. Take it FWIW.

Cheers,

Gary

Re-Tron for Reason. It's an excellent new rack extension and is the most accurate sonic rendition of an M400 in software. But then again, we're bound to say that!

Yes, I forgot about Reaper! Efficient, stable, very inexpensive. Supports ReWire, AU, VST. Sweet sounding.

Thanks for the help everyone. The 400 page Reaper user guide is a bit intimidating but I found all the stuff I need in about 15 mins. I will pay the reasonable Reaper fee and let you know how it goes.
