Re: [newmellotrongroup] Opinion sought on strings...

Hmmm...

Tuned brass? Should all sounds be tuned? How tuned?

I know the sounds on my original frame are miles apart in tuning. Flute and cello aren't even close, which sounds very Mellotrony indeed. I do want it to sound like a Mellotron. So that's another question then, to buy tuned or untuned?

I love the new sounds. I actually want my next frame to be the New string section, chamber woodwinds, and Russian choir. I think that one has the potential to be the best frame ever. However, I want to nail the classic sounds first.

Bass clarinet has potential.

Like some others have said, it's good to have strings, choir and brass on the same frame for blending and just playing. What about string section 2 (3 violins, viola, no cello)? A little beefier, but still close enough to the regular violins to do some blending for a slightly different variation on the "Watcher of the Skies" sound.

Keep 'em comin' guys.

Forget the M400 strings. For frame 2, I recommend something on track B that mixes well with brass, or perhaps one of the newer sounds. I am enamored with the new string section, but I also love the Bass Clarinet. If you get the Clarinet, you may want to consider the tuned version of Mark II Brass. Otherwise, attempting to mix it with the brass might make your teeth fall out.

Just trying to get opinions here. For those of you with more than one violin sound, what are your thoughts on having both MKII and M400 violins? I'm just trying to decide if I should have both types (one each between 2 frames) or just choose one (MKII seems to be prefered) and free up the last bank on the 2nd frame with something else (like oboe). Here's what I'm thinking:

1st frame:
Cello
MKII violins or M400 violins
Flute

2nd frame:
8 choir
MKII violins or oboe (or something else?)
Brass

If one has MKII violins, will he ever need the 400's? Or do you just use the MKII's and dial the tone control back? The tradeoff I see is not being able to blend the brass and choir with a string sound which is certainly a big plus. However, I don't want to waste a bank on a sound I won't use. And that Tangerine Dream oboe is really cool, right?

Guide me all you Mellotron Yodas out there.
