The Mellotron Group

"Foxtrot", "Nursery Cryme" & (to a slightly lesser extent) "Trespass"
are different to all of the other Genesis albums, the particular sound
they had then - ratty-sounding production, lots of 12-string acoustic
guitar mixed with hammond organ & mellotron, is pretty much unique to
those 3 albums, they never did that again*, and I've never heard a
Genesis "influenced" band take their sound from those albums, it's
always Selling England by the Pound that gets lifted.  The nearest
thing sonically that I can think of would be Anglagard's  "Hybris" and
"Epilog", the music is different, but the instrumentation is similar,
and they have a similar sense of dynamics.

*I wish they had!  I really like those albums, I wish there had been
another album between "Trespass" and "Nursery Cryme"

I have no idea why progressive rock gets ripped on for its lyrics,
they were really no worse than any rock lyrics, IE mainly terrible
with the very odd good bit.  Maybe with it's alleged lofty artistic
pretensions people expect better, though probably historically it's
just been another stick to beat it with for yer average
NME/Sounds/Melody Maker flack.

I didn't care for "Selling Engand by the Pound" and I am not interested in anything post Peter Gabriel, so are there any other albums I might like?
