MAGNETS?!?

MAGNETS?!?

2007-12-27 by john barrick

So, considering that those big 'ol Wharfedales were hung in the Mk Is
and IIs, is there any gear that one can place on top of a tron, beside
8X10 glossies of certain listmembers, that would really be detrimental
to the tapes?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] MAGNETS?!?

Yeah, those magnets looked rather unshielded. But,
a high-energy MOVING magnetic field is the issue.
Those speaker magnets don't move, and are an adequate
distance from the tapes. An unshielded transformer in
a power supply might be a problem, like one of those
plastic battery-substitution boxes. Or, something
motorized & unshielded could affect the tapes (Wait,
isn't there one of those in each 'tron?).

Ummm...detrimental? I don't think I would let a
cat with IBS hang out on top...

I think I vaguely remember someone mentioning ruining a tape that
got too close to a speaker while lacing it. (or can you only lace
frames?)

….An unshielded transformer in
a power supply might be a problem

Which is why the transformer on the M Chamberlins is in a detachable enclosure on a long wire otherwise it would be too close.

Absolutely right, Bernie. It would be interesting
to observe the magnetic flux pattern on those old
Warfdales, and see if it affected the tapes at that
short distance. It is possible that, after a time,
the tapes on each end of the MK2 may exibit some
high-frequency loss due to magnet proximity. I would
think the Streetly engineers considered this, and
chose appropriate drivers. Finding full-range
shielded replacement drivers would be optimum
(hopefully the acoustic properties match the old
drivers).

You can lace shoes, too. But that 3/8" stuff is
mighty expensive out of the box.

So it sounds like it'll be ok to outfit my tron with a pair of
freakishly large breasts. With no power supply, they shouldn't cause
any trouble...

P.S.- 3/8" tape is strong, it lifts and seperates...

I'm a fan from way back, Tony. Loved the extended
cut of "The Bomber" on the remastered "Rides Again".
Solo stuff is great, too. Makes me think of the
Caibou Ranch studios(now gone), as that location is
less than 50 miles from my house.

Dazed & confused? Get your head out from between
those "T"'s !!!

Joe Walsh did some memorable Hammond/Leslie work on the 1st few albums
and on the live album. Take A Look Around (live) for example.

We can't forget the 'tron lurking in the background
of "Welcome to the Club" on "So What".

Oh, yeah, CARIBOU (not Caibou) Studios; my error.
I wonder if there was a 'tron up there when the studio
burned in 1985?
