Mellotron Choir

2010-08-16 by Mike Dickson

We seem to have some stories and information available regarding a few
of the people who recorded Mellotron sounds way back, but I've never
heard anything about the original eight voice choir - who they were, how
they were found, how they were recorded, etc.

I still think it's the best sound to come out of a Mellotron, so I'm
really just curious about this. Anyone know?

eight voice choir: "Four males and four females in octaves. The female voices in the mix extend across the entire keyboard, but the male voices repeat in the last octave with the second octave." (Dave Kean's notes). I recall reading somewhere that the four voice male choir and the four voice female choir (available separately) were blended to produce the 8VC. The male choir recording session may have taken place at a different place and time from the female choir recording session. John Bradley may know who they were and how/when they were recorded.

The 8VC was recorded for the M400 (prior to 1970 I guess). Wakeman's Hallelujah Chorus live was recorded 1n December 1972. Is that the first appearance on a recording? (SEBTP was recorded about a year after Wakeman's live Hallelujah Chorus).

I doubt whether the sound was recorded before, say, mid-'72, as its first
uses are around the same time - Wakey's Hallelujah Chorus (and is it on '6
Wives'?) and The Strawbs' Lay Down, recorded late '72.
