M400S Serial 1190 has arrived.

M400S Serial 1190 has arrived.

2007-12-19 by jeffc@netaxs.com

it is with mixed emotion that i announce the arrival
last nite of M400S serial 1190.

the good:
now i have 2 m400 mellotrons, though 1190 is really
just here for safekeeping for an undetermined stay.
it has a squeaky clean almost new [circa 2001] streetly
tape frame, and an updated motor card - one that i
cannot immediately identify [pics taken will be posted
ASAP]. it came with not only the 'bondage-muff' but
also in a road case - not one that i would ship it
around the world in, but more than adequate for local
or even cross-country touring. this m400 was originally
owned by a local [philly] r&b producer that gave it to
my boss a few years back, and has been in our studio
since then [being maintained and repaired by me when
needed - i have mentioned some of the stupidity that
it was subjected to previously on the old list]. it
seems that because it was well-protected in its early
life, it is, even now, in very good condition indeed.
the keyboard itself appears near mint - much better
than the one in serial 364. the biggest issue right
now is that i have no room in my studio for it until
i do a major overhaul, so the it's in the bedroom.
this DOES NOT please the wife [but the bondage suit
might come in handy if things get TOO ugly ;0) ]

the sad:
this came about as a result of the company i used
to work for closing down and clearing out the
studio complex. it was on the cover of MIX magazine
just a few years ago as one of the "best new rooms"
feature they do annually. a couple million $$ were
spent creating and gearing it [72 input SSL 9000J],
all quested monitoring, dual studer 24 tracks...]
but the studio business has gone so far into the
toilet that the facility can't even make its rent.

i did manage to weasel a couple other choice items
out of the place [again, just mine for safekeeping]

tc electronic 2290
[with unknown ram - i need to open it up and poke around]

eventide orville
[esentially an h7x00 if i am not mistaken]

lexicon pcm-91
[the reverb only unit that goes for about $1100 used]

and a roland jv-2080 with 7 [!] expansion cards
[i am decidedly unimpress with the sounds in this
thing, though there are THOUSANDS of them!]

i'll get the pics posted when i can - the motor
card is DEFINITELY updated [the metal bracket
that once held the OLD card is still there. this
m400 is also running on 220 via a quite heavy
transformer [is that the technically correct
term for a "step-up" unit?]. the new card is small
of stature and mounted on the bottom panel right
in the middle - it has one large blue cap on it.
the pics will no doubt solve any mysteries...

best,
jeff

Wealth does not buy good sense.  I really hate that they have hosed you again Jeff.

Another good save.  It could have gone the way of Sun Ra's keyboard collection.

What tape set is in 1190. I can't believe I am asking this. They buy an antique SSL board and no extra racks for the mellotron.  Genetic fade.

Me too, what happened? I saw him with the Arkestra twice and his
keyboards seemed just fine at the time.

no real hosing involved.
i guess i actually made out pretty well:
a mellotron and a few grand's worth of processing.

hey - at least they had the good sense to listen to
me and buy a new frame from streetly.

i did a little more digging on this mellotron.
it belonged to richard barrett:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Barrett_%28musician%29

richard left us in august of last year [2006].
i don't know what, if any, tracks this m400 was used on.
more digging is in order...

Sunny got prototypes and freebies from everyone. Crumar / GDS, Moog
gave him Minimoog (modular sort of) and a GDS prototype built by Kevin
Doren himself I believe. Tons of other stuff that was in development.
All of which eventually faded into pawnshops in North Philadelphia or
off into the clutches of irresponsible hangers on who didn't even know
what the stuff was.

Gino, it's sad, but not altogether surprising. Ra always seemed to
operate on a shoestring (or less) budget. When making tour stops in
the early '80s in Kansas City, he, June Tyson, John Gilmore, and
Marshall Allan (I think) would stay at my wife's house, which was a
standard inner city shithole rented by a bunch of art students, rather
than a hotel (don't know where the rest of the group was put up). I
think the logistics of taking a band that large on the road was beyond
his financial reach - but they managed to pull it off come show time.

Sunny and his very silent business partner were skinflints.  Allen and Gilmore were devoted to him but most others stayed as long as they could stand then split cause he just wouldn't pay anybody.  It was very cult like and Sunny dug the attention and manipulation (subtle it was),  I loved the man despite all of that. He was an original and a real Muso.

BBC Radio Three ran a very long audio documentary on Ra and his music.
One of the topics covered was his discipline of the band whilst on the
road. The worst you could get was 'The Treatment'. Ra would not let you
live with the band, but instead would put you up in the very best
hotels, get taxied to the gigs, but just not let you play. I think it
was Gilmore who recalled this story.

When some other band members heard it they seemed incredulous that Ra
would ever out /anyone/ up in a hotel other than some place where you
had to share bed space with rats.

I remember visiting at Grandma's. If you were naughty, you had to sleep on a cot in the same room with her and Grandpa. Together, their snoring was like some evil locomotive slowly chugging its way through the peaks and valleys of hell.

There weren't enough pillows that you could wrap your head with to keep that vile sound away. It's a wonder apnea didn't kill them both. They lived well into their 80s to torture their descendants.

I think Ra stayed for days on end at their place, learning to make music that would torture us all. Gramps was a monster Bass Fiddle player.

Hi Jeff-
Could be an SMS-3 card like mine, if it was mounted
in the late '70s. Mine has the card model number
stenciled on the bottom of the card, opposite the big
capacitor, near one corner (I believe). It is just
visible under the heatsink. Wedge a mirror behind the
corner, see if you can see it. Yes, yours has a novel
mounting location, but the heatsinks are oriented
correctly.

Interesting to note that my unit is #1221, just a
few minutes younger that the one you mentioned. My
motor controller is mounted on the wooden subchassis,
just above the power supply (where the CMC-10 once
resided).

i'll have a peek under there tomorrow and report back.
as i mentioned previously, one of the CMC-10 brackets
is still in place. and yeah - good to see heat sinks
mounted on the proper orientation. you can see in the
picture that there is a sort of "shield" between the
card and the tapes behind it [a glimpse of the lovely
streetly frame in the bakground].

hmmm...
when did the SMS-3 become the "new replacement" card?
i think that #1220 still had the CMC-10 when it was
brought to me for repair/updating.

i LOVE when that happens.
#1220 lives in maryland now. my friend purchased it from
the original owner that he was in a band with years ago.

i had an opportunity to purchase the sequential pro-one
that has the next serial to mine - we both bought them
at the same store on the same day, but when he offered
it to me a few years later i didn't have the $$ :(

alas...

Hey, Jeff-

The SMS-3 was an old upgrade card in the '70s, I
didn't mean to give you the wrong impression. I think
Sound Sales supplied it to customers. Mine looks like
it was replaced in the field, as it has none of the
other Sound Sales bodges. The modifications on my
unit were done by someone with poor soldering skills,
which I have corrected.

Someone correct me please. Isn't the SMS-2 the
basic card that Streetly currently provides for CMC
upgrades?

Thanks Martin-

I kinda like that mounting method more & more. It
removes some weight from the subchassis, which may
benefit the frame geometry.

And I'm sure he's making tons more money since you corrected them. That was awfully nice for you to do for a fellow human being.

;)

I have a confession to make. I'm currently "responding" to my publisher's edit for my next novel, and I actually wrote a sentence yesterday that came out: "He was a grey-haired, wiry guy with a big nose named Barry."

Fortunately, I caught the error.

And happy holidays to all you tossers!

Interesting! That might have been the best part of the book. The story of a guy with a nose for mystery.

"...they were partners, of course, and he depended on his nose. He had named the nose Barry, in honor of his nose's ability to sniff out clues. Barry used to sniff glue. But now, after building an intolerance to Toluene, Barry finally had the scents to turn his talents to fighting crime. Yes, it was true, Barry had ditched the glue to go for the clue.

"Barry new he was a big nose. His partner's love of gin over the years had changed him. However being large and veiny had its advantages... too many to count, in fact. Barry knew he was lucky; lucky because his partner was a detective and not a staff obstetrician in some senior citizens home. That would have sucked...

Thanks Rick-

Yeah, I wish I had actually met the bodger.

By the way, what did you re-name the nose?

;-)

Have a merry Christmas!

Barry was sad in a way. He knew he was just a nose. He had hoped to become a private dick, but somehow, he knew that was beneath him.
